What is normal behavior for a teen?

Adolescence is a time when children test boundaries and begin to separate from their parents. They are forming their own identity so it is normal to experiment with different hair and clothing styles, change their opinions or question family rules. They are in the process of figuring out who they are and who they want to become as adults. Some days they will push away from their parents and other days they will want to be close like a young child. There is a real push and pull going on inside of them and within the relationships with their parents. This is all normal.

How do I know my child
needs help?

• Dropping grades
• Disconnecting from friends and family
• Sneaking out
• Using drugs
• Isn't communicating
• Showing signs of violence or self-harm

What can I do right now?

• Set boundaries: Teens need you to be their parent not their best friend. It helps them to feel safe and secure knowing what the limits are even if they complain about them.
• Be open: Ask them directly when you think something is happening. Be respectful and avoid being shaming.
• Find a good therapist: Allow them to make the final decision about whether they want a particular therapist. A good idea is to tell them that therapy is not an option but they have the choice of who to see. Then tell them they can choose from 3 therapists (this prevents them from going through 10 therpaists as a means to avoid it altogether).
