Depression is a mood disorder that can affect anyone. It is not a character defect or something to feel ashamed about. It is a result of many factors including: family history, genetics, chemical imbalance, personal relationships, and life events. It often times will significantly impair relationships and the ability to function at work.
Some symptoms of depression:
Feeling sad, irritable, empty
Feelings of guilt, hopelessness, or worthlessness
Thoughts of suicide
Difficulty concentrating and making decisions
Loss of interest in usual activities
What can I do right now?
Find a good therapist that you connect with.
Get support from family and friends.
Recognize how negative thinking is impacting you and work to change it.
Get physical. Being active can be a factor in helping manage depression.
Consider medication. This is not for everyone, but along with therapy, can be very effective for either long or short term use.
